Year Five Sports Festival

On the 16th May, Farlington held a Year Five Sports Festival and pupils from Loxwood and Longacre joined our Year Fives. Us Year 10s were given  certain jobs and roles throughout the day, ranging from team managers, stations leaders, sticker givers and photographers! The children seemed to be really enjoying themselves and worked well with their peers to complete the activities and got very competitive! Overall it was a great day and and we really benifitted from the experience and had a great time interacting with the children. We would all love to do it again!

Shrek the Musical

This week 15 members of the boarding house went to Covent Garden and then on to see Shrek the Musical at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. After enjoying the street performers and doing some shopping we proceeded to the theatre to see what turned out to be a very entertaining show for all ages. The special effects of the animatronic dragon flying over the audience during the final number was particularly enjoyed, along with the sing-a-long of I’m a Believer that ended the show. Everybody had a really good time and enjoyed the trip thoroughly. Thank you to Mrs. Kelly and the Gappers, Meg and Nicola, for taking us.

Use your degree as a base, not a box.

Last Friday, Ms Regan came to speak about  Law as a career. This is the third talk this term and, once again, it was very interesting and informative. She gave some valuable advice for getting into not only Law, but for any degree. ‘Use your degree as a base, not a box’,  something you can leap off from. She advised students to take advantage of everything that’s on offer, particularly in the Sixth Form, as universties and employers are looking for more than just good examination results. Sports, drama, music, D of E  and areas like the debating club will all add to your CV. Volunteering also shows you are more than someone who can just study and work;  you are prepared to add something to society. Law is about taking the two sides of the arguement and coming up with an informed decision; as a lawyer, you need to be balanced.

Our thanks to all of the parents who have given up their time to talk with such enthusiasm to the girls; they have all gained a huge amount from each and every talk. More information can be found on the School VLE: Sixth Form, Choosing your course.

The Children’s Commissioner – Dr Maggie Atkinson

On Thursday, 15th March, the Children’s Commissioner, Dr Maggie Atkinson came to talk to Years 10 and 11 about the United Nations Convention which gives children under 18 various rights. It was really interesting to learn about the different articles that protect us as children and what our rights are. We realised we are very lucky because some of the rights which we don’t even think about and just take for granted in this country, are things that other children struggle for.

In groups, we looked at a few of the articles in a bit more detail and decided what we thought about them, whether they were good or bad.

We had some great discussions and Dr Atkinson seemed to really love her job and take our views as children seriously. We are grateful to her for taking time to come and talk to us and we hope to meet her again soon.

Children’s Commissioner visits Farlington

Last Thursday, the Children’s Commissioner Dr. Maggie Atkinson came and talked to us about the Children’s Act and our rights as children. It was really interesting to find out that it was the largest Human Rights Act in the world and only two countries have not signed up to it. She made us think about the powers we have in school and how fortunate we are to be able to express our views. We would have loved to talk to her for longer, but we all really enjoyed the time we had with her.
